EQUALITY OR REVOLT!
To act is far more difficult than to speak. Yet, neither seems possible without the other.
We have chosen to act—for ten consecutive years now through our Pride Week, an institution in itself that has navigated through all social, political, cultural, and academic developments in Kosovo.
This year, our demands are the same as they have always been, but stronger—grounded in an activism that will not bow to the propaganda of individuals or various groups. Equality or Revolt—the slogan of this year’s Pride Week—can be read in many ways: as a call for our place in public life; as an appeal to be included where major decisions about our lives and the lives of our friends are made; as a protest against the physical attacks and hateful rhetoric we face daily; and as yet another celebration of our existence, which—like any other existence—neither seeks nor awaits acceptance or legitimization.
We have spoken and will continue to speak, through our work and our tireless commitment to the rights of LGBTIQ+ communities in Kosovo. When you defend one person, you defend an entire humanity. When you defend a human right, you move the world’s consciousness forward. In the current moment of Kosovar society and the wider world, advocacy like ours calls for unity—for equality, justice, and equal treatment at every threshold of our shared social space.
We are working toward the establishment of a safe shelter for LGBTIQ+ individuals facing violence or exclusion; for the legal recognition of same-sex partnerships and the protection of our families; for equal access to dignified, non-discriminatory healthcare; for an inclusive education that does not silence our identities; and for effective protection from hate speech and violence. The list is long—just as our strength is.
