Civil society organizations CEL Kosova, CSGD, YIHR, KKSGJ and CRD condemn the publication of the name of the person who reported the case for threats and incitement to hatred. It is important to emphasize that LGBTI+ people face a high degree of systematic violence and discrimination. One of the main concerns they face is the lack of sensitivity and confidentiality of information about them.
The prosecution, as a law enforcement body, must follow high professional standards and ensure that information related to the case is carefully preserved. The identity of victims, including those of the LGBTI+ community, must be protected to ensure that they do not face increased risk.
We request that the prosecution launch a full investigation to reveal the flow of information and ensure that justice is done fairly and with respect to all individuals.
We also emphasize that the media bear an extremely large responsibility in preserving the identity of individuals, especially in sensitive cases or surrounded by social stigmas. This responsibility includes maintaining privacy, respecting journalistic ethical standards, and obtaining prior permission for sharing personal information of persons. The media must prioritize the well-being and safety of the victims, avoiding the harm that may result from the distribution of personal information.
